A run-down heritage showroom in Windsor has become the home of the second restaurant under the banner of local taquería Fonda Mexican. The shell of the building was discovered during demolition, and the design was built around highlighting the pre-existing features. This included the cathedral ceiling and trusses, stained glass windows and other period ornamentation. A new insertion conceptualises the kitchen at a more vernacular scale, and is surrounded with custom Techné-designed elements including rope-strung benches that reflect traditional Mexican crafts, and pendant lights based around Acapulco chairs.

Perth’s Terrace Hotel has been listed as a finalist in this year’s West Australian Heritage Awards. Established over 20 years ago, the awards are a showcase for excellence in revitalising properties in the State Register of Heritage Places – identifying both innovation and best practice standards.
Opened in November 2012, the luxury property has 15 suites, a restaurant with a garden terrace, dining, bar, wine cellar and three private function rooms. “It is such a beautiful property it caught the eye of famed entrepreneur Lord McAlpine, who saved it from demolition in the early 1980’s,” says General Manager, Michael Collins.
“Our projection is always to pay respect to this landmark building’s heritage whilst ensuring it presents to our guests the very best in 21st-century accommodation and services.”

Stokehouse is one of five finalists from around the world for Best New Restaurant by the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2013! Designed by Queensland-based architecture and interior design firm, Arkhefield, the restaurant is the only Australian restaurant to be a finalist in this category.
Completed in November 2011 and located in the River Quay precinct at South Bank, also designed by Arkhefield, the restaurant seeks to embody an experience and expression unique to Queensland. The design personifies the relaxed elegance of the original St Kilda restaurant in Melbourne whilst creating its own atmosphere in a sub-tropical setting.
“We are thrilled to see Stokehouse and Brisbane leading the way for Australian
restaurants globally,” says Arkhefield Associate Interior Designer Angela Layton. “But most of all, we are delighted with how Stokehouse has been embraced by the community and become something that everyone can be proud of. The real outcome is that it shows off the best of Brisbane and gets people excited to share the city they live in.”
Arkhefield Principal Andrew Gutteridge says, “Clients and the public are more and more understanding and appreciating Queensland design and they want to, and will, see more of it as the state continues to grow. Arkhefield are committed to making every project contribute to the public realm of the city and the people that
live in it, and Stokehouse is testament to this.”
Other finalists in the Best New Restaurant category include The NoMad in
New York, Geist in Copenhagen, Dabbous in London and Attimo in Sao Paolo.
Mitchell Ogilvie:
168 Edward St, Brisbane QLD

Every self-consciously upmarket commercial centre aims to have one: a standout precinct of luxe retailers. Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Dior, Ferragamo, Gucci… the list is as familiar as it is exclusive.
Brisbane’s Edward Street plays host to a deluxe conga line of prestige marques, including an interloper, a homegrown Australian success story: Mitchell Ogilvie.
Actually, ‘interloper’ is the wrong word. Mitchell Ogilvie can almost single handedly take credit for the gentrification of the Edward Street shopping strip. Some 30 years ago he put his name above the door of a men’s outfitter, making a name for himself, and attracting others in the Birdcage set along the way.

Upscale casinos are a haven for primo retail. And like 24-carat limpets, you’ll always find upmarket stores selling fancy undies and expensive jewellery. I’ll allow you to draw your own conclusions about why they’re such a good ‘fit’, but so it is with Crown Casino and LK Jewellery.
