Harbour Rocks Hotel

34 Harrington St, The Rocks NSW 2000
1800 251 210 or www.harbourrocks.com.au

Australia has its own historic palace in the recently rejuvenated Harbour Rocks Hotel. Comprising of a colonial three-level building as well as six adjoining terrace buildings built in 1887, the 59-room boutique hotel sits on the site of what was originally Sydney’s first hospital. Having undergone various incarnations since that time, the site was transformed into the Harbour Rocks Hotel in 1989.

The Harbour Rocks Hotel has been stripped back, exposing its original sandstone and brick walls, its labyrinths, its working cottages and its open courtyard in a major redesign of the hotel interiors undertaken in 2011. The result is a boutique venue in which the history of the site and the precinct in which it sits can be seen with every turn.

Canvas Club:

16B Logan Rd, Woolloongabba, QLD
(07) 3891 2111 or www.canvasclub.com.au

It seems Brisbane finds a new pocket of territory to forge a hot spot every few weeks. Canvas Club is one of the first to come together in Woolloongabba under Brisbane City Council’s new small bar license. Forging on from her amazing work with Nic Brunner at Cloudland, and her own reimagining of Aladdin’s Den at Cloudland Cellar, Alexa Nice has taken to this small cocktail and wine bar with her considerable talent. She’s also brought in the talents of Jimmy Bliggs and Troy James, who are responsible for the custom wall art. Speaking of walls, Nice has used plenty of recycled timber panelling, which encompasses the venue from floor to ceiling. Planter boxes and large gilt mirrors cap the walls off, and combine with Parlor Furnishings upholstery and Warwick fabrics. While the white onyx bar is the perfect platform for Canvas cocktails, absinthe fountains and hand carved ice. Another job.

(07) 3840 9888 or www.themelbournehotel.com.au

Melbourne Hotel, in Brisbane’s West End, has been transformed from a tired hotel into a modern venue with a considerable breadth of offerings. It has The Office — an all-day dining area; an upstairs wine bar called Twelve; Tempted café and deli; a gaming lounge; and the Melbourne cellars wine store. When SSI Group took over the hotel, as part of the deal they inherited a venue full of TVs – so many, in fact, that some punters were going home with migraines!

Big Cohiba

Level 2, 161 Spring St, Melbourne
(03) 9654 6300

The Melbourne Supper Club has been a late-night quaffing institution going on 10 years now. It’s Con Christopoulos’ baby, and the sibling to The European — the adjacent bistro he established around the same time. Since those formative days he’s taken on the tenancy of the neighbouring title and added the City Wine Shop retail shop and wine bar. With over 1300 wines on the Melbourne Supper Club list, Christopoulos figured it a natural move to offer the same selection off license.
