Parramatta’s Albion Hotel has undergone a radical facelift, including the introduction of a 700-capacity live venue and nightclub called Gasworks, as well as a beer garden and bar. The hotel belongs to the Solitel Hotel Group. Audio consultant David Gilfillan designed and specified the audio requirements for the hotel with Beyond AV supplying and installing the equipment. A large number of JBL speakers were specified as well asCrown amplifiers and BSS processing — and judging by the model numbers (Crown CTS amps, JBL Vertec speakers, BSS London) it was a case of ‘the very best of everything’ As far as the lighting is concerned, there’s some genuine innovation there as well. David Milton, the entertainment manager for Solitel, and Terry Lunney, the Albion’s licensee, worked with Show Technologyand Beyond AV, alighting on the interesting use of Pro Shop LED tiles on the ceiling instead of the more common use on the floor. The venue has quite a pitched roof, which tends to give it a barn feel — not the image the owners were after. However, the 36 LED panels act as a false ceiling, bringing the punters’ sightlines to only that level. “The LED panels are a great effect,” said Samantha Jones, who operates the lighting for the live shows and also sets it up for the DJs. “We mainly use them during the nightclub mode when we use a Martin LightJockeyto run effects through them. They also focus the attention onto the dance floor.”
