Canberra’s largest nightclub, Academy, is now lit up with a new Robe moving light installation from locally-based Elite Sound & Light. It’s designed to provide the best lighting and visual experiences for EDM club nights and visiting live artists.

Elite’s Darren Russell was asked to propose a design, and his primary concern was to spec fixtures that would give the flexibility and variety of effects needed for long periods of operation, that would enable the club to have a completely different look and feel according to its programme that night.

Academy has an 800 capacity main room and a 150-capacity Candy Bar upstairs, which features a glass wall along one entire side. There is also a VIP section.

The Robe fixtures chosen are LEDWash 600s, DLS Spots and Pointes, all from the ROBIN series – eight of each. The new rig is three times the size of the previous lighting system, but consumes less than half the power. The lights are installed on the house trusses in the roof – giving positions over the stage and part of the dancefloor – positioned so that they can have the best effects throughout the space, with two of the DLSs rigged on a bulkhead over the bar.

Navarra Venues recently opened its latest venue, Oatlands House, with a Georgian-inspired decoration created by KW Interiors and furniture provided by B Seated Global. It’s a beautiful venue surrounded by the luscious greens of a golf course.

The look of the new interior was inspired by the age and character of the home from the Georgian period. “We liked the Georgian inspiration set back in the 1890’s but added beautifully toned and textured layers that created pure luxury and elegance,” says Marie Florio, from Navarra Venues.

Doltone House Hyde Park is a new meeting and events venue with high ceilings, lots of natural light and uninterrupted views of Sydney’s Hyde Park.

The Hyde Park Ballroom is the main room which can be divided, via operable walls, into four smaller rooms, or any combination thereof, if required. The Manhattan and Avenue Rooms are smaller meeting spaces often used as pre-function rooms.

Fredon designed, supplied and installed all of the audio visual requirements for the venue working closely with inhouse AV company Microhire.

When designing the system, Fredon took into account the venue’s main markets: weddings at the weekend and corporate events during the week. The wedding function mode required a fairly simple system that the banquet staff could operate whereas the corporate setup is where the AV system really comes to life.

Classic waterfront restaurant Wildfire’s owner Tonči Farac decided it was time to give the fine establishment an audio makeover calling in the experts at Compact Monitor Systems.

“The client also wanted to expand the audio to several zones and include areas that haven’t previously been covered whilst redoing those that had with a more complete sound system,” explains Bill Richardson, managing director of Compact Monitor Systems.

Compact Monitor Systems completely dismantled the existing audio system and replaced all of the processing with BSS BLU, all amplifiers to Crown Audio and added a wide range of JBL speakers. The venue already had a dozen JBL Control 25AV speakers which were redistributed into areas that were not previously covered.

“The C25s were in perfect shape and ideal for reuse,” commented Bill. “The rest went to the audio retirement home.”

The venue is divided into eight audio zones including main dining area, the private dining room, the mezzanine, the bar, outdoor seating area, front entry area and the bathrooms.

Melbourne-based Alexa Nice Interior Design has recently completed the design of a New Mexican cantina inspired bar, Chilliwow.

The overall design and feel of Chilliwow is a colourfully rich, playful and relaxed atmosphere showcasing the historically-beautiful Mexican culture. The venue, is spread over three levels complete with private dining rooms, a dance floor, private dining booths and an alfresco area.

Inspiration has been taken from colours and patterns of the natural Mexican landscape elements, with blues, yellows, pinks and oranges applied to the facade, interior and alfresco areas, with architectural and cultural elements layered into the design, accents of festivities, iconography and Mexican symbolism completing the look.

Audiovisual solutions for Chilliwow was sourced from Acoustic Technologies. The venue required a versatile accurately zoned sound system that blended into the exotic and colourful decor but still provides the required volume levels.

Café Sydney

Customs House, Alfred St, Circular Quay
(02) 9251 8683 or www.cafesydney.com

For Café Sydney Restaurant Manager Todd Cummins, the “big drawcard” of the particularly dining experience is the outside dining area that takes full advantage of the venue’s striking views of Sydney Harbour. “There’s not many restaurants in Sydney with an outside area on level 5 of a building,” Todd explains. “Most of them are on the ground floor. So that makes it special”.

With half of the restaurant located outside, it was imperative that this premium space offered a level of year round comfort – but not just any heater would do. “We had [heaters] which were very ineffective – the wind kept blowing them out all the time” Todd goes on to say. “So we had to look at other designs. We had to look at what technologies were out to see how we could better improve outside.”
